Albert Einstein

Born in Germany but studied in Switzerland and became a Swiss citizen in 1901.

In 1905 whilst working in the Berne Patent Office he published 4 highly original scientific papers:

1. the theory of relativity

2. the theory of Brownian motion

3. the photon theory of light

4. a paper on molecular dimensions

In 1916, he followed these 4 theories with a general theory of relatvity - which was later verified in 1919.

Albert einstein's work had a profound effect on science his thoeries superseding those of Isaac Newton, and swet the scene for a new era of modern physics.

In 1921 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for physics.

A Jew, he decided to leave Europe during Hitler's rise to power and emigrated to the U.S. where he became professor of physics at the Institute of Advanced Study in Princetown.

In 1939, Einstein was persuaded to write to president Roosevelt after reports of German scientists were developing nuclear weapons.

Although Einstein was not invloved in the production of the world's first atomic bomb, the the bomb did depend on the the principles that he laid out in his thoery of relativity.
