W. Clement Stone

Born William Clement Stone on 4th. May 1902.

His father died when he was a young child but at the age of 6 he sold newspapers in Chicago so that he and his mother could get by. By the age of 13 he had acquired his own newstand and sold newspapers in restaurants which was a novelty at the time.

He moved to Detroit at the age of 16 to help his mother in an insurance agency that she had set up there.

He became a great student of Orison Swett Marden and loved the "poor boy makes good" stories.

He made a career of selling insurance together with his mother - she as the manager and the young Clement Stone as the salesman.

By 1919 he had formed the Combined Insurance Company of America and by 1930 had over 1000 insurance agents selling for him right across the United States.

W.Clement Stone's insurance company grew to $1 Billion and later merged in 1987 with Aon Corporation and eventually sold off in 2008 for a massive $2.56 Billion.

His autobiography: "The Success System That Never Fails" became a best-seller and he always emphasized one of Orison Swett Marden's qualities - "positive mental attitude" towards making money.

W. Clement Stone was also an editor of "Success Magazine" the self improvement magazine that Orison Swett Marden founded in 1896.
