Abraham Lincoln (1809 - 1865)

Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln rose from extremely humble beginnings to become the 16th. president of the United States.

He was born in a lof cabin in Kentucky in 1809.

He received no formal education and was self-educated. (Orison Swett Marden followed a very similar path to success, also having been self-educated).

Lincoln worked his way up to being a lawyer, sat in Congress and later, in 1856, joined the Republican party.

In 1860 he was elected president, largely because of his support for anti-slavery.

His term in office was taken up by the civil war against the southern slave states that had withdrawn from the Union after his election success.

Only five days after the Union civil war vistory he was assassinated at Ford's theater in Washington D.C. The killer was an unknown actor John Wilkes Booth whose motive was to revenge the defeat of the South.

Lincoln was to die in hospital the next day but became both a martyr and a hero.
