George Washington

George Washington was an american general and became the first president of the United States, from 1789 - 1797).

He started life as a land surveyor at the age of 14 and inherited a large Virginian estate in 1752 from his brother.

He became one of the wealthiest men in viginia by his marriage to a wealthy widow - Martha Custis.

His life as a country gentleman was interupted by was with the French between the years 1754 and 1758.

And after managing his estates for 15 years he commanded the forces of America in the American War of Independence (1775).

From untrained and baly equipped tropps he somehow managed to put together an army capable of defeating experienced British troops.

In 1781 after five years of fighting he captured Yorktown, with French support.

In 1787 he was chosen as president of the Constitiutional Convention and two years later elected first president of the republic.

He was re-elected in 1793 but refused a third term of office.
