Winston Churchill

A British statesman with a good pedigree. One of his illustrious forebearers was John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough.

Churchill was Britain's Prime Minister during world War II and largely credited with the vistory due to his dogged resistance and inspiration to the British people.

"I have never accaped what many people have kindly said, samely that i inpsired the nation. It was the nation and the races dwelling all around the golbe that had the lionheart. I had the luck to be called upon to give the roar."

Churchill became a Conservative MP in 1900and later joined the Liberals. He was appointed first lord of the Admiralty in 1911 and mobilzed the navy on the eve of World War I without waiting for official cabinet authority.

He was appointed chancellor of the Excheqer during the General Strike of 1926 and was again apppointed first lord of the Admiralty upon the outbreak of World War II.

When the Prime Minister of the time, Chamberlain resigned (1940) he was appointed Prime Minister.

His stirring speeches with his characteric cigar and V-for-victory sign, inspired the whole country.

His great achievement was the "Grand Alliance" between Britain, the USA and the USSR. And on 8 May 1945 he announced Germany's surrender.

At the end of the war his Conservative party was defeated (9145) but he later returned as Prime Minister in 1951 and remained in office until 1955.

Churchill had many other skills. He was an artist and a writer and won the nobel Prize for literature in 1953. His greatest work being 'The Second World War' (1948-54).
