Babe Ruth (1895-1948)
Ruth was brought up in poverty in Baltimore and was later left into a boys' home. He began playing for the Baltimore team while still in his teens but was sold to Boston Red sox in 1914. In 1919 he moved to the New York Yankees and took the team to 5 world series victories. His career total of 714 home runs held until 1974. By 1936 he retired - legend. His character was somewhat tarnished because of his reputation for drinking, brawling and womanizing.
