'Babe' Ruth was what he was known as but his real name was George Herman Ruth.

Ruth popularized US baseball in the 1920s.

His "larger-than-life" character and outstanding talent made him a legend..

And although he hold the record for the number of home runs - he also holds a record for the number of strike-outs.

Ruth was brought up in poverty in Baltimore and was later left into a boys' home.

He began playing for the Baltimore team while still in his teens but was sold to Boston Red sox in 1914.

He attained popularity as a pitcher was was really famed for his aggressive batting.

In 1919 he moved to the New York Yankees and took the team to 5 world series victories.

His career total of 714 home runs held until 1974.

By 1936 he retired - legend.

His character was somewhat tarnished because of his reputation for drinking, brawling and womanizing.
