Tiger Woods (1975 - present)

Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods was born in December 1975, a truly multi-racial child with African, Thai, Chinese, American Indian and European ancestry.

He was playing golf by the age of two.

He featured on television in 1978 putting against Bob Hope and was again on television aged 5 on ABCs "That's Incredible".

Aged eight, he won the youngest age category (the 9-10 years old boys event) at the Junior World Golf Championships.

Tiger went through thirty junior golf events across Southern California without defeat.

In 1994 he won the U.S. Amateur title aged just 18 - the youngest ever champion.

He became the only golfer ever to win three successive U.S. Amateurs.

He's become used to winning titles ever since!

Heere's a famous moment in his career. A video that is titled: "Walk on Water"

Tiger says that Buddhism, his mother's religion, has taught him patience and discipline.

These two success qualities have created a phenomenon in golf, massively increasing its global appeal.

But - Tiger thinks there are more important things than golf.

"My dad has always taught me these words: care and share. That's why we put on clinics. The only thing I can do is try to give back. If it works, it works."

He established the Tiger Woods Foundation to promote non-sporting activities as well as golf for disadvantaged children.

The aim is simply to help youngsters become better people - with Tiger providing millions of dollars in funding as well as serving as a good role model.

A few Tiger Woods quotes:

"Don't force your kids into sports. I never was. To this day, my dad has never asked me to go play golf. I ask him. It's the child's desire to play that matters, not the parent's desire to have the child play. Fun. Keep it fun."

“no matter how good you get you can always get better and that's the exciting part”

"I know what I want to accomplish and I know how to get there. The ultimate goal is to be the best. Whether that’s the best ever, who knows? I hope so."

- the words of a real winner.
